Setup Exchange in Outlook

This manual helps you to configure your Maastricht University employee or student account in Microsoft Outlook via Exchange.

What do you need?

  • Outlook installed
  • An employee or student account of Maastricht University

 

In this manual we assume that the installation of the Outlook has been successfully completed but Outlook still needs to be configured.

Please consult the “Frequently Asked Questions” at the end of the manual in case you encounter problems in using the manual or the service.

Step 1: Start Outlook

  • After the installation of Office there will be an icon in the start menu under Microsoft Office which is called Microsoft Outlook, or you will find the icon under your apps when using Windows 8 or 10.
  • Click this icon to start Outlook.
Step 2: Add New Account

  • When first starting Outlook the following screen will appear
  • Fill in your complete @maastrichtuniversity.nl e-mail address
  • Click “Next”
Step 3: Account verification

  • Outlook will check your account and complete the configuration
  • Click “Finish” to complete configuration
Step 4: Fill in your credentials

  • After finishing the configuration you only need to fill in your username and your password in the Windows Security pop-up.
  • Username: Unimaas\student-id or employee account
  • Password
  • Start Outlook

 

Adding an extra account

Step 1: Open options

  • Click “File”
  • Click “Add Account”

Step 3: Finish

  • Outlook will inform you of the successful configuration. Please restart Outlook to open the new mailbox.

 

Step 4: Authorize (optional)

  • In case your account does not have access to the mailbox you added you need to separately log in to the account corresponding to the extra mailbox.
  • Log in using the UM username and password for the e-mail address mentioned
  • Optional: Tag the checkbox to save the credentials (Outlook will store the password in your computer and will not ask for the credentials next time)

Remove an extra account

Step 1: Open options

  • Click “File”
  • Click “Account Settings”
  • Click “Account Settings”
Step 2: Select account

  • Select the account you would like to remove
  • Click “Remove”
Step 3: Confirm

  • Confirm removal of the account
Step 4: Close the configuration

  • Click “Close” to return to Outlook. The account will be removed.

Outlook returns an error “Outlook cannot log on”
  • A connection with the Exchange server is only possible when your computer is connected to the university network (MAASnet) as stated at the top of this manual.
  • When you are not connected to MAASnet, you will receive the following error message at the startup of Outlook 2010: Outlook cannot log on. Verify you are connected to the network…
  • First create a connection to the network and then click Ok.
