Why is it important to upgrade to Windows 10?

Windows 7 will be end of life in 2018. Microsoft will not release any longer security updates. To ensure a more safer environment we need to upgrade to Windows 10.


  • Where is the control panel?

    Click the “Start” button and then type “Control Panel”. You can now open it.


  • How does the search function work ?

    Press the “Start” button and type what you are looking for in the search box on the task bar. You will get “suggestions and answers” to your questions and search results from your PC and the internet.


  • How do I pin icons to the task bar?

    Make sure the program is running. Once it is running you can right click the icon and then select “Pin to task bar”.


  • How do I shutdown / sign out of the computer?

    To shutdown: Click the “Start” icon and the “Power button”. This will give you the following three options; “Sleep”, “Shut down” and “Restart”.
    To sign out / lock: Click the “Start” icon and the “UM button”. This will give you the following three options; “Lock”, “Sign out” and “Switch account”.


  • How do I create tiles in the start menu?

    Click the “Start” button and look for a program either by scrolling or typing the name of the program. Right click on the program and select “Pin to Start”.

Known issue: Do not login while your computer is disconnected from the network. Your own created tiles will disappear.

  • Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge?

    At first it might appear that Internet Explorer is gone. Windows is trying to show you their new browser “Microsoft Edge”. It is similar to Internet Explorer. Feel free to try it out. Internet Explorer can still be found in the search bar and you can still pin it to start and your task bar. Internet Explorer is the default browser for the concern systems of Maastricht University.

  • Right clicking on the start menu gives me a lot of options?

    Most of these options are not useful for a default user. You can shut down / log off in this menu, go to the Windows 10 “Settings” screen and start the task manager or file explorer. These are the most relevant options for users.
